Why do chilly temps wreak havoc on car batteries?

Sluggish car batteries can be problematic any time of the year, but they’re far more common in the winter.

Here’s why:

When temperatures dip, oil inside your car’s engine is colder and thicker. Getting an engine to turn over under such circumstances simply takes a little extra oomph. Unfortunately, below-freezing temps can also cause a weaker electrical current. In other words, your car doesn’t have the extra oomph that it needs.

So, what can you do?

• Have your battery checked by a service technician, especially if it’s more than a few years old. It’s always best to address any mechanical issues BEFORE they become emergencies.
• If possible, park your car in a garage. This way, your battery is bound to be warmer than when you park outside.
• Finally, keep jumper cables and a roadside emergency kit in your vehicle – just in case you get stranded.
