In most states, it is against the law to use tires with a tread depth less than 2/32 of an inch. Although Indiana doesn’t have a similar law in place, it’s wise for Hoosier drivers to follow this widely-recommended safety practice. But how can you tell if your tires are past their prime?

Here’s a little trick …

Grab a penny and flip it so the image of Abraham Lincoln’s head is upside down. Now, insert the penny into several different tread grooves. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to replace your tires. (Tires don’t always wear evenly, which is why it’s important to perform the penny test in several locations).

Remember: When it comes to safety, tire tread is extremely important. With worn tires, you’re more likely to spin out, and you’re vehicle is prone to hydroplaning in wet driving conditions. Poor tire tread is especially dangerous with snow and ice on the ground.
