Happy birthday, George Washington!
Here’s a little bit of Presidents’ Day trivia for you: Today isn’t actually Presidents’ Day.
The federal holiday we’re celebrating on this third Monday of February is officially George Washington’s Birthday, but even that is a bit of a misnomer. As it turns out, our country’s first president was born Feb. 11, 1731 — not Feb. 16, as you might think.
The confusion began back in the mid-1700s when Britain and its colonies adopted a new calendar. For some reason, Washington’s birthday was moved to Feb. 22, and we celebrated it that way for more than 200 years. Then, about 50 years ago, lawmakers decided three-day weekends were in short supply. (We’re not arguing with that). The third Monday of February became a federal holiday called Washington’s Birthday, but mathematically speaking, Feb. 11 and Feb. 22 won’t ever fall on a third Monday. (Oh well!) Also, there are lots of folks who feel we should honor other former presidents, too, which is why the day is often dubbed Presidents’ Day.
Now that we have that out of the way, we got to wondering … did any former Presidents drive a Honda? We’re not sure, but we think they should have! In the meantime, we did find this slideshow featuring a few of the cool cars driven by former U.S. presidents before they took office.
