Running low on gas? Fill ‘er up!
Running dangerously low on gas is never a good idea, but it’s definitely a no-no in the winter.
For years, prevailing wisdom suggested that condensation in a fuel tank was more likely to occur during frigid temperatures. This, in turn, could block your fuel line and make it harder to start your car. Advancements in automotive technology make this less likely to happen, but it’s still probably not a good idea to test fate.
Another consideration? Winter weather can be unpredictable, and if road conditions are poor, a short trip can easily become a much longer one. You don’t want to run out of gas simply because you couldn’t get to a gas station in time.
Finally, if you do happen to get stranded, you could be putting your own safety at risk. If you’re nearing empty, you won’t be able to keep your car warm for long, and that could spell trouble!
Our advice? Play it safe. Make it a habit to fill up BEFORE your car drops below a quarter of a tank.
