Deer accidents are especially common in the fall

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 1 million car-deer accidents occur each year. These accidents result in about 200 annual deaths and more than 10,000 personal injuries.

So, how does one avoid a deer-related collision? Consider the following facts and safety tips as you venture out this fall:

• Deer are most active at dawn and dusk.
• Deer often travel in groups. If you see one, there’s a good change others are lurking nearby.
• It’s common to see deer in areas where you’ve seen them before.
• Use high-beam headlights when you can.
• Be extra careful near wooded areas, hills and blind turns.
• If you do see deer, don’t swerve. (Many serious accidents occur when drivers swerve suddenly, only to hit something else.)
• If you see a traffic sign that suggests deer could be nearby, take heed.
