Be careful … driving on Halloween can be dangerous!

Boo!

As we head into Halloween weekend, there are sure to be plenty of witches, zombies and ghosts on the prowl, which means we ALL need to be extra careful when we get behind the wheel of a car.

In Fort Wayne, expect to see an influx of kids Saturday between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. (Click here for a list of trick or treat hours in other communities.)

It’s especially important to drive slowly if you happen to be in neighborhoods and other areas where children are present. Keep the following safety tips in mind:

Slow down, and don’t zip past stopped vehicles. A herd of trick-or-treaters may be getting ready to climb in or out of a car.

Avoid using your cell phone. This is certainly a smart driving strategy any time you are behind the wheel, but it’s especially important on Halloween. Pay extra attention to what’s happening around you.

Be on the lookout for children. In all of their excitement, little ones are likely to forget common safety rules. Sure, they probably know to look both ways before they cross a street — but that doesn’t mean they’ll remember to do it as they’re collecting their treasured candy!

Bottom line: Be extra careful! We wish everyone a safe and fun Halloween!
