Word to the wise: Don’t eat behind the wheel!
While texting takes the bulk of the heat in conversations about distracted driving, a recent article in Insurance Networking News suggests there are plenty of other dangerous behind-the-wheel behaviors.
According to the article, the nine most common distractions associated with risky driving behaviors were:
• Holding an object in your hand — 44.5 percent
• Talking on a handheld mobile phone — 13.4 percent
• Sipping a beverage –12.7 percent
• Eating — 10.1 percent
• Smoking — 9.9 percent
• Operating a handheld device — 9.1 percent
• Talking/listening on a hands-free mobile phone — 5.2 percent
• Looking at a manifest, map or navigation device — 1.0 percent
• Grooming/personal hygiene — 0.6 percent
Bottom line? Keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel. Be safe, everyone!
