The scoop on distracted driving

May 20th, 2013 by

When we hear people talking about distracted driving, most of us probably assume that text messaging is the biggest and most dangerous offense. (It is a huge danger – in fact, people who send and receive text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash than those who are not distracted.)

But text messaging is NOT the only danger that can inhibit drivers who are sharing the road with us. Other distractions include:

  • Talking on the phone
  • Eating or drinking
  • Chatting with other passengers
  • Personal grooming
  • Reading or looking at maps/written directions
  • Using GPS devices
  • Making adjustments to radio, CD player or MP3 player

Many of the above activities are very common – and a lot of them don’t carry the stigma associated with texting and driving. Sadly, however, they can be just as dangerous.

Do your part! When you get behind the wheel of a car, take that responsibility seriously and be safe!
