Caution: Work Zone Ahead!

May 9th, 2014 by

constructionAfter hearing the sad news that two road workers were killed early this morning on I-69 just north of Indianapolis, we are compelled to remind everyone to be EXTRA careful when driving through construction zones.

This is an especially timely reminder, as construction work is in full swing throughout the region – and will be over the next several months. Consider the following safety tips as you make your way through work zones:

Plan ahead
If you happen to know that one of the main roads on your normal route is under construction, go another way (if you can).

Slow down
This is extremely important for everyone’s safety, but it can also help you avoid a costly traffic ticket. Speeding in a work zone can put a big ding in your pocketbook.

Choose a lane and stay there
Jumping back and forth rarely saves time, so it’s probably best to stay put. Instead, try to make the most of your time in the car. Pass the time by listening to an audio book or some favorite tunes.

Look out for road crews and construction vehicles
Road workers encounter dangerous situations everyday. Be alert when you are traveling through an active work zone.

Be mindful of other drivers
Allow a little extra room between you and the car in front of you, and let other drivers merge when necessary.
